Leisure Time

If you still have the time - and energy! - to spare after visiting Orlando's themed attractions, why not visit one of Florida's many other attractions. Here are some examples:-

Beaches

Cocoa Beach - Probably the nearest beach from the Orlando/Kissimee area. It is about an hour's drive directly east of the attractions area, on the Atlantic Ocean and is six miles long by less than a mile wide. Widely known as the surfing capital of the East Coast, Cocoa Beach is the hometown of a number of surfing champions - including six time world champ Kelly Slater. One popular landmark store is Ron Jon Surf Shop which specialises in surf culture goods.

Daytona Beach - This 23 mile beach is popular with tourists and proclaimed by locals as "The most famous beach in the world". It is about one and a half hours drive from the Orlando area. Cars are still allowed on the beach as they were in the days of the famous car races. Sports on offer here include jet skiing, windsurfing, para-sailing and boat rentals.

Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse - This inlet is just 10 miles from Daytona Beach. Completed in 1887 this 175 foot high lighthouse still functions and you are able to climb its 203 steps to the top and go outside to the walkway which encircles it. It is said to be the second tallest lighthouse in the North America. The admission fee charged covers the lighthouse museum, a micro-theatre historical film, nature walk and gift shop. You are also able to charter a boat and do some deep sea fishing.

Canaveral National Seashore & Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge - Situated near to the Kennedy Space Centre this is considered to be one of the most beautiful stretches of beach in the U.S.A.Many endangered species can be found here including loggerhead turtles and West Indian Manatee.

Madeira Beach - This beach is situated on the Gulf of Mexico and is about one and a half to two hours drive to the west of Orlando and is found near to a small tourist centre which has quaint stores, restaurants and tourist goods. It is next to John's pass, an old style fishing village where you can rent jet-skis or go out for an evening on an entertainment boat. You can also sail out on a dolphin watch cruise or a deep sea fishing boat.

Fishing

Visit the Fishing in Orlando site. Black bass, catfish, bream and others are fished in the 300 named lakes in the Greater Orlando area. Anglers who prefer sea fishing can cast their lines from piers, the shore or deep-sea fishing boats in the East Coast waters that are just under an hour's drive or in the West Coast waters only two hours away.

Cruising

Port Canaveral is the second busiest cruise port in the world. During calendar year 2004, a record 4.6 million revenue cruise passengers passed through the Port's cruise terminals.

There are numerous cruise options at Port Canaveral. Partial day as well as two, three, four and seven day itineraries are available.

The Cove at Port Canaveral is a waterfront recreational area. It is home to a variety of restaurants, shops, charter boats and attractions.

Swimming and water skiing

The area's six world-famous water parks offer water lovers all the fun they seek. Area water-ski facilities include Buena Vista Water Sports, Sammy Duvall's Water Sports Centre and Orlando Watersports Complex.

Tennis

There are tennis courts available at the Hampton Lakes site, free of charge to guests. If you want to go a little further afield, Orlando can offer more than 800 tennis courts!

Orlando is home to seven shopping malls, with a total of nearly 1,000 stores.
